How to Write a Writing Residency Resume

How to Write a Writing Residency ResumeA writing residency resume is one of the most important documents you will produce for your potential employers. Although it may be tempting to hire a writer in order to reduce your cost and increase your profit, a resume should be carefully crafted and professionally presented. With this in mind, it's important to understand the information that should be included and that will help to get the job.The first thing you need to do in writing residency resumes is to identify what you are going to be writing about. The industry isn't exactly devoid of positions. Depending on the desired level of professionalism in your writing, you may choose to write about your skills and abilities or how you plan to utilize these skills. When selecting a topic, make sure you're familiar with what the residency program is like before you start thinking about writing about it. A great way to help you get started is to ask your peers who are in the same program what q uestions they have regarding it. It will help to take notes from the course material and interview some of the other students who are in the program. You'll find that a general consensus exists regarding the program you will work at.As mentioned, the residency program isn't necessarily one size fits all. Therefore, you may want to choose which region you'll be living in based on the type of work you will be doing and what sort of experiences you have in your field. If you're a certified nursing assistant, you'll probably work in a hospital setting. One important thing to note before you begin writing a writing residency resume is to determine what sort of tone you'd like to adopt in it. The easiest approach would be to use a clinical tone, but remember that you're not actually writing for an employer. You can still dress it up however you wish. The entire point is to capture the essence of the residency program.A writing residency resume is a remarkable piece of writing craftsmanship . In addition to the resume itself, you will need a cover letter, which is very different from the typical cover letter you receive from any other job offer. If you're writing a cover letter for an employment opportunity, you'll need to go beyond the standard employment resume. It should reflect your professionalism, character, and experience.Learning as much as you can about the residency program you're applying for. You'll want to research how long it has been in operation, the organizations that it supports, and the exact requirements for entrance. There are even special online writing residencies that you can take, so you can learn even more about what you're applying for. Once you've gotten through these, you're well on your way to writing a winning resume!

Happy 55th, President Obama! Heres Some Retirement Advice

Happy 55th, President Obama! Here’s Some Retirement Advice Happy birthday, President Obama! We hope you have a fun celebration, because after all the candles are blown out you’ve got some hard facts to confront: You’re 55 today, August 4, 2016, and you’ll be losing your job soon. As we generally tell readers who are in your situation, your next phase will bring new freedoms, but it may also involve some anxiety. After all, the job market can be an unforgiving place for midlife job seekers. The average duration of unemployment for those 55 and over is 37.4 weeks, compared to 23.7 weeks for those under 55, according to an analysis by Sara Rix, formerly of the AARP Public Policy Institute. “Age discrimination is real,” says Chris Farrell, author of Unretirement and senior economics contributor to Marketplace. Sure, you’ve got some advantages over your peers. Most people looking for work don’t have a global network of world leaders who will pick up the phone whenever they call. And most lack a fat savings cushion. With resources include your presidential pension and your book profits, you have the luxury of time as you plot your encore career. We consulted experts for some advice about what to do in your position. Before you take action, do nothing, says Nancy Collamer, author of Second-Act Careers and founder of MyLifestyleCareer.com. “Take time off and get away,” Collamer says. “Give yourself time to decompress, to recharge your batteries and to give yourself some distance from your old routines.” While this advice applies to everyone embarking on an encore career, you might need more decompressing than most, given the nature of the job you’re leaving: Think months, not weeks, Collamer says. Then get down to business. Tap your network, with a twist You can skip setting up a LinkedIn profile, a critical step for most job seekers. People know your credentials. (For everyone else who does have to consider their social media footprint during the job search, here are some tips.) Before you reach out to your current network, Mr. President, spend some time with people who knew you before your White House years, Farrell suggests. Like most busy professionals, you’ve likely had little time for introspection. You may need to do some soul searching to figure out what you’ll do next, and the people who can really help you are the ones who knew you before you became Commander in Chief. College friends, as well as those from your community organizing days, can remind you of who you used to be. They might remember goals that you once held but have long forgotten. This is an opportunity to look at the big picture, Collamer says. Consider your next paid job, yes, but also your legacy, your relationships, and your own personal growth and development. Communicate with your spouse You and Michelle will be making a big transition at the same time. More often, one spouse will change jobs or retire while the other continues for a while as before. The same rules of communication apply in either circumstance, says Ken Moraif, a certified financial planner with Money Matters in Plano, Texas. “It’s important for the couple to sit down and discuss what this means to them,” Moraif says. He practices what he preaches, holding monthly “state of the union” talks with his wife of 31 years. Read next: How Not to Get Blindsided by Costs in Retirement Moraif has seen clients split when their children leave the house, or when they retire. Transitions are a natural inflection point for couples, and to avoid growing apart spouses must make an extra effort to understand each other’s expectations, Moraif says. Emotional devastation aside, divorce in later life can wreak havoc on your retirement. Perhaps Michelle wants to hit the accelerator on her career after eight years as First Lady. Perhaps you want to focus exclusively on your golf game for your first six months out of office. You’ll want to make sure you understand and support one another’s goals. Pace yourself Keep in mind that it’s much easier to add activities than to subtract ones already begun, Farrell says. Often, people who leave their careers for retirement or an encore career fill up their schedules out of enthusiasm and perhaps a fear of too much free time. High-powered professionals who leave their posts are often approached to join corporate or nonprofit boards, and you will likely field such invitations. If you’re not careful, you’ll be running around just as much as you did when you worked full time. (Well maybe not in your case, because no schedule can be quite as grueling as the one you’re leaving.) Take a slow and deliberate approach, realizing that it’s hard to cut back once you’ve made commitments. “Treat this transition as a sabbatical and don’t accept much until you’ve decided what you want to do,” Farrell says. While you’ll be leaving the comforts of the White Houseâ€"no more chef on call, or private indoor basketball courtâ€"you’ve got a lot to look forward to, Collamer says: “This can be a rich period in a person’s life.”

Microsoft is Using its Purchasing Dollars to Reflect Its Values Heres How

Microsoft is Using its Purchasing Dollars to Reflect Its Values Heres How The U.S. has a parental leave problem. Because theres no federal law requiring companies to provide employees with paid parental leave, new parents often have little to no paid time off when they have a child. This is bad news not only for parents or expecting parents, but also for companies employers that fail to properly support their employees risk attracting and retaining top talent. But Microsoft is doing its part to mitigate the effects this parental leave problem. In plus-rechnen to recently enhancing its own parental leave policy which now provides both mothers and fathers with 12 weeks of fully paid leave its also requiring Microsoft suppliers and contractors to offer their employees at least 12 weeks of maternity leave.Lindsay-Rae McIntyre, who joined Microsoft as Chief Diversity Officer in July 2018, recently spoke to Fairygodboss about this groundbreaking new policy. Having led HR and diversity ef forts at IBM, where she worked for more than two decades, McIntyre is now using her expertise to help ensure Microsoft employees are supported and valued as their full, authentic selves. McIntyre shared how and why Microsoft decided to implement this policy including what the approval process looks like what the company hopes will happen as a result.Tell us about your new program that requires Microsoft suppliers and contractors to offer at least 12 weeks maternity leave. We rely on a wide array of other companies to supply us with goods and services that reflect their core competencies. The people who work for our suppliers are critical to our success, and we want them to have the benefit of paid time off. That is why over the next year, we will work with our suppliers to provide paid parental leave to their workers. Microsoft will require that suppliers provide 12 weeks of paid leave, at 66% of pay, with a cap of $1,000/week. This policy will apply to suppliers with 50 or more emp loyees in the United States and will apply to their U.S. employees who have worked for them for more than nine months (1,500 hours) and who perform substantial work for Microsoft. What welches the genesis of this new policy? What are you trying to achieve through it?We thought about this in the context of the broader supplier relationships on which we rely. From building maintenance to management consulting and campus security to software localization, we rely on a large group of outside companies to do what they do best.By taking this new step, we will focus our resources on doing geschftliches miteinander with companies that share a commitment to providing these types of strong benefits for employees.Companies like Microsoft are in a unique position to create a positive impact on workers and we hope other organizations will consider similar changes to their policies. What was the process through which it moved through the company? Who had the idea for it, and how was it approved and executed? The decision to implement this new policy builds on several recent steps Microsoft has taken to focus its resources on doing business with companies that share our values to increase workforce inclusion and support employees and their families. We believe this is the right step for our business and that paid parental leave benefits our entire community. In 2015, we startedrequiring our US suppliers to provide annual paid time off for their employees doing significant work for Microsoft. In 2015, weenhanced our paid Parental Leave for Microsoft employees to 12 weeks, paid at 100 percent, for all mothers and fathers of new children. For birth mothers, this is in addition to the eight weeks of maternity disability leave they currently receive, paid at 100 percent, enabling them to now take a total of 20 weeks of fully paid leave if they choose. In 2017, we announced a new global benefit for our employeesfamily caregiver leave. Family caregiver leave allows an employee to take up to four weeks of fully paid leave to care for an immediate family member with a serious health condition. This policy could potentially increase costs in some ways. How did you overcome that hurdle? This announcement is an example of us intentionally using our purchasing dollars to express our values. Were looking to work with suppliers who share our values and are interested in taking these steps in the interest of their employees.Do you hope other companies will follow suit? We hope other companies will consider similar changes and that they will engage in the important discussion around creating a national standard so that all American workers, regardless of where they work, have access to paid parental leave. We will continue to explore the best ways to partner within our broader community. What can we expect to see next? We continually recognize our success depends on the success of others. We are listening and will keep looking for ways to engage with our communities to broad en economic opportunity.

The ingenious way one VP beat the gender pay gap

The ingenious way one VP beat the gender pay gapThe ingenious way one VP beat the gender pay gapWhat would you do if you were sure your male colleague was making much more than you? You can read page after page of work advice, and youll never zulauf across what this woman did and won.Today, Karen Rubin is VP of Growth at Owl Labs. But in a previous job, she was at VP level at another organization and she was pretty sure there was a gender pay gap situation going on.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreI had a hunch that things were not exactly equal on the pay perspective but to be blunt, was worried about bringing it up, Rubin told the Ladders. Nobody wants to be the person saying, Its not fair.A colleague of hers suggested she propose a study. Yes, a study. They would look at the pay across the organization, and figure out, Are women and men being paid equally? And do it in such a way that we could actually use it to learn from, explained Rubin. And so we wrote up the proposal, and explained how were going to do the study, and presented it to the CEO, and then asked for access for all of the pay data for the employees. He promptly said, No, but took the study we proposed and ran it on his own, which I give him a lot of leistungspunkt for doing. The CEO sat down with them to talk about the results. They were really interesting, said Rubin. What they discovered was that the company did a really great job hiring women at equal pay levels to the men that they were hiring. They had done a pretty good job of recruiting women into the organization. But there were some problems during the promotions process. And there was one noticeable discrepancy At the VP level, there was a problem with one person being paid less than the other VPs.That was me, said Rubin.Needless to say, Rubin got a raise. It was an interesting, different way to try and solve a problem through data as opposed to just saying, I dont think this is fair I think something unfair is happening, Rubin said of her strategy. Thats never the reason I would want to argue for something. This is just a different approach that worked really well because it came down to the data. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will ersatzdarsteller your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people
